Designer to Watch: Koji Sekita

Japanese designer Koji Sekita has been drawing attention for his Watching You chair and says he wants to create new products that people have yet to see. Luo Jingmei has the story.

Since Koji Sekita’s first participation at Salone Satellite last year with the Watching You chair, his work has gone on to be featured in magazines and he has also received offers to have it produced commercially.

Watching You is made from special paper that is cut into shape and bent in a zigzag manner to create a delicate honeycomb-like form. It is as strong as it is lightweight and throws enchanting shadows under the light.

“I never think about vogue,” says Sekita, who studied Space Design at Kuwasawa Design School.

Currently working at Kubota Architects & Associates Inc., Sekita is inspired by dedicated craftsmanship and constant improvement through trial and error.

He says he aims “to produce new things that nobody has seen”, and also believes “that outstanding design makes people happy”.

Sekita has just wrapped up a recent showing at last year’s Tokyo Designer’s Fair in November and has also been invited to participate in Singapore Design Week 2012.
