There may be no shortage of clubs in Singapore’s thriving night scene, but none perhaps have the staying power of Zouk; club-goers have been faithfully trooping to the mega complex since it opened its doors in the early 1990s.

Independent consultant Phillips Connor, who was responsible for Zouk Singapore’s last 2 renovations in 2000 and 2005, and the Kuala Lumpur club in 2003, was once again enlisted, this time to give the Velvet Underground party zone at Zouk a bold new look.

The client wanted to “create an entirely new identity, progressively defining ’the edge’,” says Connor.

The new Velvet Underground now features 2 distinctly separated dance and lounge areas to better cater to different customer types.

The larger Lounge Club is more luxuriously furnished and segregated from the Dance club. The bespoke Dance Club also has improved access to DJs, a more immersive music environment, and the LED ceiling plane creates a strong interactive environment when the party is in full swing.

“The key challenge was to create an entirely new club experience within an existing shell, surpassing the previous experience by the widest margin possible,” says Connor.

A new boomerang corridor now connects the Lounge and Dance clubs and leads customers in from the entrance.

300 fins also line the walls and ceilings as one progresses through the space. “It gives a striking visual rhythm – a metaphor to the underlying structure of the progressive music for which this club is known,” Connor explains.

Original installation work by digital artist Ina Conradi is also featured here. Almost 15 metres long, it seeks to express the motion, life and vitality that embody the club spirit.

The artistic sensibility continues with an extensive collection of art pieces displayed throughout the club: Murakamis, Warhol, Stella, Haring, and Romero Britto, just to name a few. It even extends into the new communal wash area with a striking “Tattoo Wall” photographic art installation.
